Long Term Individual Mobility in Darmstadt, Germany
April 12 2026 - May 13 2026
Hi, I'm Thomas Remondini, a student of the 3DS class. I had the incredible opportunity to spend one month in Darmstadt, Germany. During this period, with the valuable support of Heinrich-Emanuel-Merck-Shule (HEMS), I completed an enriching internship at the company ENTEGA. This experience taught me a lot on multiple levels, allowing me to discover local culture and tradition while enhancing my technical knowledge and skills.
School:
HEMS is a professional school that focuses strongly on technology, engineering and computer science. This school gave me this opportunity of learning in a new environment and I was always in contact with teachers. They were incredibly supportive and ready to help me with anything I needed. Beyond the regular activities the teachers even organized something on my weekend, that also helped me to bond and discover the surrounding area. This welcoming atmosphere made my transition to Germany much smoother.
Company:
ENTEGA AG is one of Germany's leading regional eco-friendly utility and infrastructure providers, headquartered in Darmstadt; in fact you can see its logo everywhere in the city. I learned IT-based applications in the IT-Lab within the “Count+Care”; it`s a special unit focused on digital innovation and advanced IT infrastructure. The training center offers specialized support and professional tools including 3D-printer and laser. My time was heavily focused on project based learning, which allowed me to learn by doing my projects.
The main project I built was a smart trash bin powered by an AI that could actually detect the type of trash. Developing this project allowed me to learn a wide variety of skills like building circuits, 3D-printing and complex problem resolving. Afterward I created a website with various activities, experimented with Microbit using Maqueen and Husky Lens. I also spent time testing and learning new coding languages and libraries.
People were very nice and available in case of need to assist me with tools or answer my questions.
Host Families:
During my stay, I was hosted by two different families, I stayed with each for two weeks. Both families were extremely kind, hospitable and made me feel like I was at home. They fully integrated me into German traditions and cultures by preparing typical local dishes and sharing with me the history behind some buildings or places.
Experience:
This experience gave me unforgettable memories, I tried to explore as much as I could of visiting the city, I met amazing new people and had fun together. I visited beautiful places, great buildings and tasted completely different food.
The feeling of being in another country, immersed in a different culture and language is really engaging and challenging in the best possible way.
I loved everything I did during this month, it helped me a lot to improve both my German and English language skills. It was truly a journey I will always remember.
